Hong Kong’s Foreign Correspondents Club has suspended its annual human rights press awards, citing concerns that it may violate the city’s expansive national security law. The move has drawn criticism from journalists and former award winners who described it as a sign that the club could no longer serve its mission to defend the freedom of the press in Hong Kong.
The first prize winner of the 2017 HKSAR Youth Art Prize was Nikola GAO, who won a cash award of HK$8,000 and a school award of HK$20,000. The other prize winners were Sze Wing Cathy and Yip Chun-yue, who both won a public vote prize of HK$4,000.
During the Hong Kong International Technology and Innovation Talented Youth Development Summit, Nobel laureates shared some of their groundbreaking academic insights at the event’s science zone. 2020 physiology laureate Harvey Alter explained his pioneering research on the treatment of hepatitis C, while 2019 physics laureate Didier Queloz took attendees on a journey of cosmic exploration. Other Nobel laureates presented their groundbreaking academic insights on topics including biophysiology, astronomy, and the interplay between biological, human, and machine intelligence in scientific innovation.
Moreover, the event also introduced some of Hong Kong’s top young scientists. 2016 Life Sciences Prize Laureate Dennis Lo Yuk-ming and 2021 Physical Science Prize Laureate Luk Kam-biu discussed the latest developments in their respective fields, ranging from the use of artificial intelligence to a new method for detecting heart attacks.
Meanwhile, the event’s business zone showcased various innovative products and services from local companies, including a smart car-sharing platform and a virtual reality headset. In addition, the event also offered a range of education and career-related workshops, and a special session was held for secondary school students.
During the lucky draw to determine the winning tickets, clients will be categorized into 2 segments; customers who have traded Hong Kong stocks from 2 January to 10 May 2024 (“Existing Client segment”) and those who have not traded Hong Kong shares or opened an account during this period (“New Client segment”). The winners will be announced within five working days after the draw concludes.
All the prizes above will be awarded to each winning ticket holder (excluding any insurance prizes) in the event of a win. The number of prizes will vary depending on the total number of winning tickets, and the total prize pool value is subject to change.
